Displaylink makes X sluggish and displays (temporary) artifacts when moving windows

On my new HP Elitebook, while displaylink is active everything feels sluggish, just as if acceleration was switched off, even stuff that happens on the monitor directly connected to the PC.

Only on the monitor managed by display link, artifacts (short horizontal lines) appear when moving windows, but fortunately go away on their own within a second after movement.

I can confirm that. I have the same problem on basically all my machines. Not just HP. A Tinkpad T15 can't even move Windows without lagging the whole system. CPU utilization is 100%. Both Wayland and X are sluggish. However, I see performance problems even on Windows.

The only workaround I have, is to go back to stuff that worked for the last 20 years: Direct video output via DP / HDMI. I don't know why that stuff became the de-facto standard nowadays. Watching Videos via Displaylink is almost impossible, due to the low framerate.

In the meantime I switched to a Thunderbolt docking station. Not only got I rid of the problem, but it's faster too (snappier window movement)
