2 HDMI Outputs

I have...
HDMI / Display port
HDMI / Display port 2

..In my output sources in the built in Sound setting. However PyAudioSelector only recognizes the one that is currently selected. It will not show both HDMI sound outputs in the menu. I tried refreshing and restarting. Any idea how to make sure it always shows both HDMI outputs like it does in my Sound settings?

Hi! I don't have the hardware needed to reproduce that behavior, but I think that the issue is related to how PulseAudio handles differents outputs from the same sound card.

If you have time, it would be very nice to try to manually route the audio sources to each one of your outputs. Next is a hint of what the script does under the hood:

• The PulseAudio devices are retrieved by executing pacmd list-sinks at the shell, and then parsing the device name and the index number of the available sinks.
• The PulseAudio inputs are obtained the same way as before, but executing pacmd list-sink-inputs
• When you set an output device for a audio input at the dropdown menu, then the script executes pactl move-sink-input <input_index> <device_index>.

I have the feeling PulseAudio is not listing your output devices as different sinks, so they are not being listed at the menu . If you find a way to manually route them using pactl, please tell how and I'll gladly make the changes required for the script to work with your hardware.

I'm looking at the information now. Since we are talking about outputs im guessing you mean pactl move-sink-output however im looking at pacmd list-sinks trying to find the exact information for output_index and device_index all I see referring to index, is a number at the top. Can you tell me what that information would look like?

Hmm, the command used to route inputs is pactl move-sink-input despite the ambigous name.

Talking about the device_index, you're right. After executing pacmd list-sinks, the numbers at every leftmost line which looks like * index: <number> are the ones used while calling pactl. Don't worry about the * . It may be or not present, and indicates that the device is the default one. For the audio sources is the same story, when calling pacmd list-sink-inputs you got to look at the leftmost lines starting with index for the number.

Right now I have in my pc the next sinks/sources:

$ pacmd list-sinks
2 sink(s) available.

Then I can route the Spotify (index 292) between my laptop speakers (index 0) and my Bluetooth headphones (index 44) by executing:

$ pactl move-sink-input 292 44     # moves music to the headphones
$ pactl move-sink-input 292 0      # moves music back to speakers

I hope this info helps you to understand how the script works (it doesn't do very much else than calling pactl!). If you can reproduce this, then we should dive into the pactl documentation and find how your devices could be listed (and routed) properly. Once that, the changes should be easy to made.

I think I find the root of your problem:

What the script currently routes are entire sinks, and every sink could have many ports. It's highly possible that both of your HDMI/DP outputs were under the same sink, but on different ports, in a two levels hierarchy. Look at what happens with the built-in sound card of my laptop:

$ pacmd list-sinks
2 sink(s) available.

	...

Then, I can set the active port of the built-in sound card sink by executing:

$ pactl set-sink-port 0 analog-output-headphones  # send the music to the headphones jack 
$ pactl set-sink-port 0 analog-output-speaker     # send the music to the laptop speakers 

I think the main difference between sinks and port for what we try to achieve is that one could have different sinks playing different inputs simultaneously, but only one port per sink being active at any time.

Let me know if this effectively route the audio with your hardware. I don't have much time to make further research now, but I think that the problem is there.

haha, thank you for all the research!

You are definitely on the right track with this new information. However I have a single video card on my desktop using 2 different HDMI ports. Unfortunately the * index number changes every time I change my HDMI source on the card in sound settings 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,9 10, 11 etc....

Also pacmd list-sinks only shows the connected hdmi-output-0 or hdmi-output-1. It will not show both with index numbers in the list, at the same time. When looking at the info of each individually, it shows alsa.device = "3" is hdmi-output-0 and alsa.device = "7" is hdmi-output-1

Also pacmd list-sink-inputs returns 0 sink because I only use the hdmi. Have no other audio devices connected.

So it looks like I'm SOL unless there was some way to make this change without referencing the index number.. or i guess using pacmd at all lol.

• At this point, it's faster for me to just map a shortcut key to open sound preferences.

I restarted my computer, and now it shows * index 0, however as the day continues, that number will rise due to switching sources.
