Pre-submission Checklist

Bug Description

I use Fedora 43 KDE. Since Kamoso, the kde webcam app is so bad (both the image and the sound from recorded videos are awful), I looked for an alternative. GNOME's Camera works but lacks everything.
So this app is an answer if it works as it should some day.
Right now (using the Flathub package):

• It has no keyboard shortcuts.
• Theater mode when activated, since no shortcuts, is pretty difficult to deactivate, unless restarting the app (see next issue).
• App resets configuration after shutdown.
• Filters work only in photo mode, not video mode.
• Theme selector doesn't work, at least in kde (not really important as at least it sticks to dark mode).

I have not thought about this that much before, since I focus on Linux phones with touch input. Nonetheless, this sounds like a neat feature and could also improve accessibility. Which actions would you like to be able to control via a keyboard shortcut and what would be the expected defaults keys?

On which app version are you? I thought that I had fixed that, but maybe not for all cases. Do you use the flatpak from Flathub (recommended) or a other package format? Can you launch the Camera app from the terminal and share the logs?

Filters work only in photo mode, not video mode

This was an active decision since it could have a huge impact on the video recording performance and quality, especially on phones which often have 4K+ image sensors and weak CPU/GPU hardware. But starting with release v0.2.0 I have completed rewritten the the capture and recording pipelines, so it might be doable now. I will try to make it work, but cannot guarantee that it will be possible.

What exactly do you mean? Does light mode not work at all? Does the Camera app not follow the system theme? Can you launch the Camera app from the terminal, reproduce the problem and share the logs?

About keyboard shortcuts, just to start with here are those in GNOME's "Snapshot" (their webcam app). O course yours has many other possibilities and also I don't know if there are some guidelines in Cosmic Desktop for some default shortcuts.

One thing that definitely needs one is exactly the Theater mode since its issue to be disabled.

Regarding the theme, yes it's always dark regardless of the choice.

Re. the filters. It's ok that they work only for photos. But for the while then there shouldn't be that option to be chosen for videos.

@Thyname Thanks a lot for the details! For the keyboard shortcut, I have opened a dedicated issue #269 and invited the COSMIC Utils community on Mattermost to participate in discussions there as well.

As I said, I'm using the official flatpak (Flathub). The settings don't stick after app restart.

I'll attach the full terminal messages from one run because it had a WARN type of message about "Permission Denied" that maybe could indicate something.
I don't remember what I did, but I basically set filters for photo, changed output format to png and timer. Everything works but doesn't keep for the next run.

Another usability tip is when we open the Settings tab we need to click 'close' for it to close. It would be intuitive, it seems (as it's what my reflexes do), for the tab to be closed if we click elsewhere in the app window.

Filters work fine in video mode and theme selector works.

But in fedora KDE settings still reset itself after closing the app.
