Summary

Add API Route as an optional named LLM provider, following the existing OpenAI-compatible provider presets.

Changes

  • Register api-route with https://global.api-route.com/v1 and default model deepseek-v4.1-flash.
  • Support API_ROUTE_API_KEY, API_ROUTE_BASE_URL and API_ROUTE_MODEL, encrypted settings and the existing model discovery/connect flow.
  • Add the settings search keyword, setup documentation and regression coverage for configuration precedence, selection preservation and key redaction.

Type

  • ✨ New feature

Testing

  • Updated after merging current main: changelog style, provider registry, provider settings router and OpenAI availability tests: 116 passed, 1 deselected. The focused environment includes the locked LiteLLM version (1.103.0); the unrelated engine inventory test requires Torch, which is not installed in this environment.
  • Offline test mode: HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1, fresh empty HF_HUB_CACHE.
  • Original submission live verification through VoiceStudio's llm_transport.create_client (not repeated for this changelog/main-sync update): authenticated model discovery returned 50 models including the default; deepseek-v4.1-flash chat completion returned OK.
  • git diff --check.

Checklist

  • I've tested this locally
  • Every commit author has signed the CLA (the CLA check tells you how)
  • I've updated relevant documentation (if applicable)
  • No local machine paths, logs, or personal env details in this PR
  • Maintained version files are in sync (if an owner-requested bump): root package.json, pyproject.toml, backend/core/version.py, and lockfiles
  • If this PR changes runtime behavior, the regression fixture at tests/fixtures/omnivoice_data/ still loads green on the smoke-matrix CI job (macOS + Windows + Linux)

API Route is available as an optional OpenAI-compatible LLM provider, with configurable API key, base URL, and model, plus setup documentation and regression tests. Users must configure a key and select the provider before making cloud requests. The author reports that focused tests passed; the engine-inventory test was deselected because Torch was unavailable.

Follow-up (2026-10-07)

Merged upstream main at 2def2f9 and moved the provider changelog entry to Unreleased → Added. Updated signed head: 44105de.

CLA and commit identity checks passed. CI and Security await maintainer approval. Full backend/frontend and macOS/Windows/Linux smoke-matrix results are pending; their checklist item remains unchecked.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The provider registry now includes API Route with default endpoint and model settings, API key configuration, and environment overrides. Documentation, settings search, and tests also include API Route.

Changes

API Route provider

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register and validate API Route
backend/services/llm_providers.py, tests/test_llm_providers.py
The registry defines API Route defaults and environment overrides. Tests cover its configuration, transport, selection state, and key handling.
Document and expose provider setup
docs/dubbing/translation-engines.md, docs/electron-llm-providers.md, electron/src/shared/components/settings/settingsCategories.jsx, CHANGELOG.md
The documentation describes API Route setup and selection. The settings category includes API Route as a searchable keyword, and the changelog lists the provider.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 44105

API Route is optional and does nothing until a user selects it and adds a key. The project's local-first rule requires owner approval for any new outbound destination, and this PR doesn't record that approval. Get the approval, or list the destination, before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 61920

The new cloud provider inherits existing credential and connection safeguards. No new control bypass was established, but deployment-specific exposure and third-party data handling remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added exposure is an external destination receiving the configured provider credential and payloads of LLM calls routed to it. Existing skill routing can follow the active provider or use explicit overrides. Maximum tenant and dataset exposure cannot be established without the deployment layout and broader caller payloads.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Provider configuration and connection writes inherit the settings router's administrative gate. Desktop loopback callers are accepted; remote server-mode writes require the administrative credential. The gate retains its existing unconfigured-server exception for read-only requests.
  • observed — The endpoint override intentionally allows a configured alternative origin. HTTPS validation protects credential transport but does not restrict destinations to API Route. This authority is inherited from the existing provider resolver, not introduced as a new endpoint-control mechanism.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Interactive connection tests use bounded connection and response timeouts, disable automatic client retries and avoid changing persisted selection during the probe. These shared controls contain failed-provider verification before explicit activation.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 4 functions across 3 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Local-First Guarantee

Explanation

The PR adds an outbound call to https://global.api-route.com/v1 through the shared OpenAI transport (backend/services/llm_providers.py:94-98; backend/services/llm_transport.py:83-86). The settings test and model-discovery routes can send requests to that endpoint, but .github/CONTRIBUTING.md:358-382 does not sanction API Route requests; the provider is optional, so this does not add a required cloud dependency, but it still adds an outbound destination outside the approved list. The diff does not change analytics consent.

Resolution

Remove the API Route provider and its outbound request paths until approved. Alternatively, obtain owner approval and add the narrowly scoped, user-triggered API Route requests to the sanctioned-call list in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md and align CLAUDE.md.

Thanks for the review. I merged current main (2def2f95) into the PR branch and moved the API Route entry into Unreleased → Added, keeping the contributor credit.

Updated commit: 44105de1029c2c789a0a8a92f5a649bcbf814fbe (GitHub-verified signature).

  • Changelog style, provider registry, provider settings router and OpenAI availability tests: 116 passed, 1 deselected. Tests ran with HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1 and an initially empty Hugging Face cache; the focused environment includes the repository's locked LiteLLM version. The deselected engine-inventory test requires Torch, which is outside this focused environment.
  • CLA and commit-identity checks passed.
  • The new CI run and Security run require maintainer approval. Could you please approve them? The full backend/frontend and cross-platform smoke results are still pending.

As with the existing cloud LLM presets, API Route uses the shared transport after the user explicitly configures and selects it with their own key. The PR remains focused on this optional preset.

Sanction API Route before adding the provider.

API Route adds an outbound destination that is not in the sanctioned list. The local-first rule permits only listed calls and requires owner approval to add another. Add API Route to the list after owner approval, or remove the provider.

Suggested fix
   - The Lemon Squeezy Pro licence check, only after the user enters a key
     (`electron/src/main/pro-license.ts`).
+ - API Route LLM requests, only after owner approval and explicit provider
+ selection with a configured API key (`backend/services/llm_providers.py`).

Hi @debpalash, could you please confirm whether you approve API Route as an optional outbound LLM destination under the local-first contribution policy?

CodeRabbit raised this explicitly in the review thread. I checked the current contribution guide and could not find an approval for this preset. The default destination is https://global.api-route.com/v1, for authenticated model discovery and user-selected LLM requests. This uses the existing OpenAI-compatible transport and requires the user to configure a key and select the remote provider.

With your approval, I can add the narrowly scoped entry to the sanctioned-destination list. Please let me know if you require any additional conditions for the preset. The CI and Security workflows also await maintainer approval; could you approve those when reviewing this request? Thank you.
