Some more breaking API changes. Hopefully for the better.
Allows easy use of the "elk" layout. The d2 compile options API is a bit odd, not sure if this string-based config is better but fits the current testing scheme well. Happy to walk that back if you want.
note: Sorry for the PR spam. Need these changes quickly so will use my master branch in the meantime, so had to recreate this PR from another branch.
