The js8 project as a whole is still trying to decide if we can support this or not. 11m usage of JS8 is TECHNICALLY against the FCC rules for 11m as well as nearly everywhere else in the world.... Now we both know its pretty harmless, and most CERTAINLY has a big following but its not been decided if it'll be included yet. There's some discussion about it in the main project at https://github.com/orgs/JS8Call-improved/discussions/161 That being said, there's already support to add any frequency you like in the settings which would let you add the 11m frequency. I'm going to hold onto the merge until project leadership makes a decision. |

If I may add my two cents: since any frequency can be added, why is this even a debate? I forsee more trouble coming from adding the "support" for 11m out of the box than benefit, since there isn't any hinderance as it stands. Opinions are like thumbs, every body has one and they all stink! |
Mostly because there is a LARGE amount of 11m JS8 usage, nearly as much as ham bands. So there's want from those users to be directly supported in the app, which is a fairly reasonable request if not for the fact that data modes on 11m aren't allowed technically. Its not really hurting anything, but the laws for the band haven't caught up with modern times. So if we directly support 11m, we're tacitly supporting pirate radio usage. |

I have read FCC reg's on 11m many times, and I cannot find anything expressly stopping people from talking through data. Channel 23 was traditionally for data and experimentation. |
FCC 95.971 specifically limits 11m/CB to AM, SSB, and FM voice emissions only. Data of any sort isn't on the allowed emissions list. Data on channel 23 actually comes from when that channel was shared with the Class C citizens radio service which no longer exists. |

Looks like the previous information I had read must have been abridged...inspite of being told otherwise. I am forced to agree that you are correct. The combination of JS8 and an AM CB radio would seem to classify as A2D...which is not expressly permitted. So, the "in between the lines" extrapolation is irrelevant. I now agree that the 11m band should not be included in the default list. It is worth noting that our government is defective. Representation should yield way to reason and petition. Instead mobbing seems to be the only method of enacting a change at the quite deaf FCC. |
Completely agree. PERSONALLY I think that things like this are a GREAT way to use the CB band, one that's been slowly dying off over the years, and is an awesome way for people to try out digital modes without the need to study for a license. But they didn't ask ME if it should be legal ;) |
