Stacked on #847. Add seqused_train/seqused_cols so padded TabICLv2 inputs can reuse compiled shapes. Mask padding, preserve counts through estimator batching and cached prediction, and reject incompatible preprocessing.

GB200: 112 tests pass; unpadded outputs match main 5e5284a bitwise. In a 600-query pretrained check, FP32 predictions match; compiled BF16 changes three predictions. Padding increases cache storage by 26%. Main also shows BF16 compiler drift.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for padded training rows and feature columns during fitting, prediction, and attention processing.
    • Cached padding metadata is reused during prediction and cache replay.
    • Expanded support for ensemble-shaped and batched inputs.
    • Improved compiled inference with reliable output and cache handling.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Added validation for padded inputs, cache data types, feature processing, callbacks, and unsupported hierarchical scenarios.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified cached key/value tensor batch dimensions and broadcasting.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for padding, caching, compilation, autocasting, batching, and compatibility checks.

The API now accepts row and column usage counts for padded training data. TabICLv2 propagates these counts into row embedding and attention. Fit caches the counts for prediction. Transformer blocks preserve out handling during compiled execution. Tests cover validation, caching, compilation, chunking, and autocast.

Changes: Padding-aware TabICLv2 execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
API validation and cache contracts
sdm/cache.py, sdm/models/base.py, test/models/test_base.py
The API validates usage counts, restricts incompatible inputs, callbacks, and feature processors, preserves narrow-hook compatibility, and replays cached counts during predict.
TabICLv2 padding propagation
sdm/models/tabiclv2/model.py, sdm/models/tabiclv2/row_embedding.py, sdm/models/tabiclv2/icl.py
TabICLv2 forwards row and column counts. Row embedding masks padded columns and propagates valid row counts. ICL attention uses clamped counts and rejects unsupported hierarchical padding.
Compiled attention output handling
sdm/nn/attention.py, sdm/nn/set_transformer.py, test/nn/test_compile_in_place.py
Transformer blocks compute functionally inside compiled graphs and copy primary results into out afterward. Tests cover aliases, dynamic shapes, cache outputs, and gradient restrictions.
Padding, cache, and attention validation
test/models/tabiclv2/test_model.py, test/nn/test_attention.py, test/nn/test_set_transformer.py
Tests cover padded rows and columns, fit/predict replay, device movement, processor restrictions, dtype and shape validation, autocast, cache replay, and induced-transformer chunking.

Cover the clone contract for cached counts.

fit clones the counts specifically so that in-place mutation by the caller between fit and predict cannot change replay masking (see the comment at sdm/models/base.py lines 416-419). No test pins that behavior down, so removing .clone() would stay green.

918-923: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

The equivalence assertion is vacuous because out_lin is zero-initialized.

Attention.__init__ zeros out_lin.weight and out_lin.bias. test_attention_kv_cache therefore copies an identity into out_lin before comparing outputs (Lines 474-476). Here no such setup exists, so out and replayed are both all-zero tensors and assert_close passes even if cache replay is wrong. Make the projection non-trivial, or return and compare the cached key/value tensors.

Pass these arguments by keyword.

_validate_seqused_inputs and _validate_seqused_recipe receive positional arguments in multi-line calls. Three untyped-at-callsite positionals (num_estimators, seqused_train, seqused_cols) are easy to transpose, and the project style requires keyword arguments in multi-line calls. Reject a non-positive batch_size_limit.

The API defines batch_size_limit as a maximum batch size and does not document or test 0 as an unlimited sentinel. This normalization changes 0 to 65_535, so batches up to that size skip chunking. Add an assertion that pins the clone contract.

torch.equal compares values, so this test passes whether or not fit clones the counts. sdm/models/base.py lines 426-429 state that cloning exists so in-place mutation between fit and predict cannot silently change replay masking. before attention in both consumers: in sdm/models/tabiclv2/row_embedding.py
lines 184-188, use the current key/value length on the non-replay path and the
cached key length on the replay path; apply the corresponding clamp in
sdm/models/tabiclv2/icl.py lines 125-126. Keep the clamp tensor-based to avoid
device synchronization and preserve the existing None handling.

Other comments:
In `@sdm/nn/attention.py`:
- Line 574: Validate batch_size_limit before the normalization in the attention
batching method: reject zero and negative values with the method’s established
argument-validation error, then retain the existing upper-bound normalization
for positive values.

In `@test/nn/test_attention.py`:
- Around line 731-734: Update the cached fixture in the test around KVCacheEntry
so key remains bfloat16 while value remains float32, isolating the key-only
dtype mismatch. Preserve the existing tensor shapes and ensure the test
independently validates key.dtype without changing the adjacent value-dtype
fixture.

In `@test/nn/test_compile_in_place.py`:
- Line 40: Set torch.manual_seed(0) immediately before constructing the first
TransformerBlock so module initialization, residual-exit randomization, and
input generation use deterministic randomness.

Nitpick comments:
In `@test/models/test_base.py`:
- Around line 626-627: Add a clone-contract test around the fit/predict
assertions for seqused_train and seqused_cols: mutate the caller-owned tensors
after fit, then assert predict_kwargs retains the original fitted values. Use
value comparisons that verify replay masking is unaffected by post-fit in-place
mutations.

Compiling `TransformerBlock`/`InducedTransformerBlock` in place fails on
TabICLv2 since #802: `predict` runs under `inference_mode`, so the `out=`
views of the shared buffer carry no `_base` and AOTAutograd cannot merge
the aliased graph inputs. The blocks now strip `out` before entering
their own compiled graph and fill it eagerly afterwards, so callers keep
the in-place contract while eager and whole-model compile are unchanged.
The regression test lives in its own module so it runs on default CI
rather than only under `FULL_TEST`, covers both the plain call and the
cache-recording (`return_key_value=True`) call that `fit()` makes, and
runs under both `inference_mode` (the `predict` path) and `no_grad` (the
path `predict` takes when a callback needs gradients; on main that route
fails differently, handing back a tensor that is not the caller's `out`).

Known limitation: only the in-place `module.compile()` form is covered.
The wrapper form `torch.compile(block)(..., out=...)` bypasses
`Module.__call__` and still fails the same way as before.

Pad in-context rows (seqused_train, per batch element) and feature
columns (seqused_cols, shared scalar); padded entries are masked from
every attention stream and excluded from column grouping. Out-of-range
counts clamp instead of raising so serving never pays a device sync;
counts are cloned into the fit cache and replayed by predict(). Enables
bucketed serving on a small warm-shape grid. Verified on GB200:
padded-vs-unpadded equivalence, full-suite failure set vs main empty.
Feature pipelines are also walked against an Identity/Clip layout
allowlist, since a stateless column-reordering step would silently
point the padding mask at real data.
The allowlist matches exact types only, since a subclass may override
the transform and break the layout.
Context callbacks that return a replacement context are rejected when
counts are set, since a shape-preserving reorder would silently move
padding into the valid prefix.
The clamping tests are parametrized over CPU/CUDA via withCUDA.
The query hook gets the same replacement guard under seqused_cols
(including the fit/predict replay), since the column count spans query
columns too.
Review fixes: replayed counts follow predict onto its device,
seqused_train gets a batch-shape check, strict estimator zip, seeded
clamping test.
The cross-device replay test is CUDA-only and skipped locally;
run it once on GB200 before merge.
