Summary

detectFormat never classified a top-level JSON array as json because the quick check required the text to end with } even when it started with [. Arrays were therefore treated as text and auto chunking skipped JsonChunker.

Fixes #1458

Root cause

if ((text.startsWith("{") || text.startsWith("[")) && text.endsWith("}")) {

The closing check only accepted }.

Fix

Pair the brackets:

if ((text.startsWith("{") && text.endsWith("}")) || (text.startsWith("[") && text.endsWith("]"))) {

JSON.parse in the try/catch still rejects malformed input.

Verification

Added unit tests that cover:

  • a JSON object (still detected)
  • a top-level JSON array (now detected)
  • incomplete JSON (still not classified as json)

The change is a one-line logic fix matching the suggestion in the issue. Local full test suite was not run because of monorepo install constraints in the environment, but the pure function behavior matches the reported reproducer.

Summary by cubic

Fixes detectFormat so top-level JSON arrays are classified as json instead of text. The old quick check required text to end with } even when it started with [, so arrays never reached JSON.parse and auto chunking skipped JsonChunker.

Bug Fixes

  • Pairs brackets in the quick check so objects ending in } and arrays ending in ] are both accepted.
  • Adds regression tests covering objects, top-level arrays, and incomplete JSON.

Written for commit f7fb353. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • JSON format detection now correctly recognizes complete top-level arrays as well as objects.
    • Incomplete JSON inputs are not classified as JSON.

The quick JSON check required the text to end with '}' even when it
started with '['. A top-level array therefore never reached JSON.parse
and was classified as text, so auto strategy skipped JsonChunker.

Pair the brackets so arrays ending in ']' are considered, and keep the
existing parse guard. Adds regression tests.

Walkthrough

The JSON format detector now recognizes top-level arrays with matching brackets, as well as objects with matching braces. Tests cover both valid forms and incomplete JSON.

Changes: JSON format detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Format check and tests
packages/rag/src/utils/format-detector.ts, packages/rag/src/__tests__/utils.spec.ts
The detector checks for matching object braces or array brackets before attempting JSON parsing. Tests cover objects, arrays, and incomplete JSON.

Explanation

The description explains the current behavior, root cause, fix, issue reference, tests, and verification limits. It is mostly complete despite not using every template heading or explicitly confirming docs and changeset status.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1458 requires that a well-formed top-level JSON array be detected as "json". The head commit changes the quick check in packages/rag/src/utils/format-detector.ts from (startsWith("{") || startsWith("[")) && endsWith("}") to (startsWith("{") && endsWith("}")) || (startsWith("[") && endsWith("]")). An input such as [{"id":1},{"id":2}] now passes the quick check, reaches JSON.parse, and returns "json". The JSON.parse try/catch is retained, so malformed input falls through to the existing HTML, LaTeX, code, table, and markdown checks. Object inputs keep their prior behavior. The test file packages/rag/src/tests/utils.spec.ts, at head, adds cases for an object ({"id":1} → json), a top-level array ([{"id":1},{"id":2}] → json), and incomplete JSON ([{"id":1} → not json). The issue's separate metadata concern (JsonChunker format overwrite) is explicitly excluded and is not required here.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against the merge base (72a46c7) touches two files. packages/rag/src/utils/format-detector.ts contains the bracket-pairing fix required by #1458. packages/rag/src/tests/utils.spec.ts contains regression tests for that same function. Both changes connect directly to the linked objective. The PR does not modify JsonChunker or buildMetadata, so the separate metadata issue noted in #1458 is not in scope and is not implemented here.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
