Smart Dustbin – Industry-Oriented Embedded System

An advanced, IoT-enabled smart waste management system designed for smart cities, hospitals, and corporate environments. This project automates waste disposal with a touchless lid mechanism and monitors the bin's fill level in real-time to prevent overflow.

🚀 Features

  • Touchless Operation: Automatically opens the lid when a user's hand is detected, ensuring hygiene.
  • Real-Time Level Monitoring: Continuously measures the waste level inside the bin.
  • Automated Alerts: Triggers a buzzer and visual LED warnings when the bin reaches maximum capacity (85%).
  • IoT Integration: Connects to the Blynk Cloud dashboard to display live fill percentages and push notifications.

🛠️ Tech Stack & Components

  • Microcontroller: ESP32 (Wi-Fi Enabled)
  • Sensors: 2x HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Distance Sensors
  • Actuator: SG90 / MG995 Servo Motor
  • Indicators: Red LED, Green LED, Active Buzzer
  • Platform/Software: Arduino IDE, C++, Blynk IoT Platform

🔌 Circuit Connections

Component Pin / Wire ESP32 Pin
Lid Sensor (HC-SR04) TRIG / ECHO D4 / D5
Level Sensor (HC-SR04) TRIG / ECHO D18 / D19
Servo Motor Signal (PWM) D21
Buzzer Positive (+) D22
Red LED (Full Alert) Anode (+) D23
Green LED (Normal) Anode (+) D32

(Note: All VCC/5V pins connect to ESP32 VIN, and all GND pins connect to ESP32 GND.)

💻 How to Run

Virtual Simulation (Wokwi)

  1. Go to Wokwi and create a new ESP32 project.
  2. Add Blynk and ESP32Servo in the Library Manager.
  3. Wire the components as per the table above.
  4. Paste the main.ino code, update your Blynk Credentials, and click Play.

Real Hardware

  1. Install the Arduino IDE and set up the ESP32 Board Manager.
  2. Install the Blynk and ESP32Servo libraries.
  3. Connect the physical components using jumper wires.
  4. Update BLYNK_TEMPLATE_ID, BLYNK_AUTH_TOKEN, and Wi-Fi credentials in the code.
  5. Select the correct COM port and click Upload.

📊 Testing Strategies

  • Empty Bin: Green LED ON, Red LED OFF, Buzzer OFF.
  • Hand Detection (<20cm): Servo opens the lid to 90 degrees and closes after a 3-second delay.
  • Bin Full (>85%): Red LED ON, Green LED OFF, Buzzer ON, Blynk App receives a Push Notification.
