Exxel - Bridging interactive testing and AI-driven tutoring

Vite React Tailwind CSS Go SQLite Docker License: GPLv3

Exxel is a self-hosted learning-verification platform designed to close the gap between interactive testing and AI-driven tutoring. It intelligently evaluates answers, tracks performance analytics, and generates exact telemetry and knowledge gaps for your AI Tutor. Requiring no API keys and universally compatible with any LLM, Exxel lets you customize your interactive learning experience like never before.

Features

  • Dashboard & Analytics: Track your overall progress, average scores, and recent attempts. Dive deeper into your data with interactive charts detailing your attempts over time and areas of most improvement.
  • Blueprints Library: Import, organize, and categorize AI-generated quiz blueprints. Create custom, color-coded categories to group your subjects effectively.
  • AI Tutor Prompt Generator: Easily generate the perfect prompt for your LLM (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) to create custom quizzes. Includes manual selection and an "Auto Mode" for optimal question distribution.
  • Robust Quiz Engine:
    • Multiple Choice: Standard 4-option testing.
    • Short Answer: Exact string and multi-variant matching.
    • Fill in the Blank: Contextual inline word matching.
    • Written Question: Long-form answers evaluated by AI.
  • Seamless Handshake: At the end of a quiz, Exxel generates a formatted Markdown handshake of your results and knowledge gaps, ready to be pasted back to your AI Tutor for targeted follow-up.
  • Command Palette: Navigate the entire platform instantly using a Ctrl+K command palette.
  • Privacy First: All history and analytics are stored locally in an SQLite database. No mandatory API keys for standard evaluations.

Install

The application is built for simple self-hosting and runs optimally via Docker Compose.

git clone https://github.com/eXistC/exxel.git
cd exxel
docker-compose up -d

Quick start

For local development without Docker, you can run the frontend and backend separately:

Backend (Go):

cd backend
go mod download
go run main.go

Frontend (Vite/React):

cd frontend
npm install
npm run dev

The frontend will be available at http://localhost:3771.

How it fits together

  • The Frontend uses Vite, React, and Zustand to manage the Quiz Engine state. It provides a minimal, modern interface with a customizable theming engine.
  • The Backend is written in Go. It is extremely lightweight, handling user authentication, telemetry, and saving attempt data to a local SQLite database.
  • The Handshake Workflow: You paste a JSON Blueprint generated by an AI Tutor. Exxel parses the blueprint, runs the quiz, strictly evaluates the answers (including regex matching), and generates a Markdown Handshake containing knowledge gaps that you can copy back to the AI Tutor.

Security

Exxel is intended for self-hosting. Since it processes JSON payloads (Blueprints) and stores user analytics locally in an SQLite database, ensure your host environment is secured. Authentication is enforced on the backend routes to protect historical attempt data.

Development

The repository is structured as a monorepo containing both the Go backend and Vite frontend.

# Frontend development
cd frontend
npm install
npm run build

# Backend development
cd backend
go build
