Closes #3833

Source Issue #3833: fix: classify Hypothesis correctly in canonical dev-tool guidance

Source: #3833

Why

Current Workflows .github/workflows/autofix-versions.env:5 lists Hypothesis with runtime dependencies. Hypothesis is a test dependency. This current documentation defect is delivered to Orchestrator #517; original finding stranske/Orchestrator#517 (comment).

Scope

Workflows canonical dev-tool dependency guidance and a focused regression only.

Non-Goals

Do not change tool pins, locks, or dependency resolution. Do not edit generated consumer PRs. Scaffold-only or partial completion does not count: the actual canonical runtime example must change and the named regression must discriminate the old text. Postmerge Maint 52 regeneration and Maint 71 review/merge remain campaign coordination, outside this implementation checklist.

Tasks

  • Remove Hypothesis from the runtime example in .github/workflows/autofix-versions.env:5 while retaining PyYAML and Pydantic.
  • Add a test-dependency explanation for Hypothesis to .github/workflows/autofix-versions.env.
  • Create tests/test_hypothesis_dependency_guidance.py to reject Hypothesis in the canonical runtime example.
  • Run rg -n 'Runtime dependencies.*Hypothesis' .github templates docs and correct authoritative duplicate guidance if any; report inspected scope in the PR.
  • Run python -m pytest tests/test_hypothesis_dependency_guidance.py -q against the old and fixed comment; retain both command results in the PR.

Acceptance Criteria

  • python -m pytest tests/test_hypothesis_dependency_guidance.py -q fails when the original runtime example is deliberately restored, and passes after byte-identical restoration of the fix.
  • .github/workflows/autofix-versions.env retains unchanged tool pin lines and PyYAML/Pydantic runtime examples; no lock or requirements behavior changes.
  • rg -n 'Runtime dependencies.*Hypothesis' .github templates docs finds no authoritative runtime example classifying Hypothesis as runtime.

Implementation Notes

The previous formatter added vague sub-tasks and then paused; its branch codex/issue-3833 is preserved. Reuse the existing owner/branch, not a second writer. No human authority boundary is established by formatting or generic capability warnings. This .env comment repair needs no workflow YAML edit. Add the regression under the existing pytest test root. Keep the implementation PR ready with canonical Tasks and Acceptance Criteria. Due follow-up 2026-10-11T20:25Z or earlier PR birth; ordinary source owner, estimated 15–30 minutes plus CI/review.

P2 Badge Implement the guidance fix before closing #3833

When this commit is used to close #3833, the reported defect remains unchanged: .github/workflows/autofix-versions.env and both template copies still classify Hypothesis as a runtime dependency, and tests/test_hypothesis_dependency_guidance.py is absent. The added ledger merely marks the first task as doing, so the canonical incorrect guidance continues to be distributed without the requested regression; include the actual guidance and test changes before treating the issue as resolved.

Remove Hypothesis from the canonical runtime-dependency example while
keeping PyYAML/Pydantic, and align the consumer/integration template

Bounded opener recovery pushed 11661dd3c15e4ce84b02ee72e5cec972ff27210a on the existing ready PR. Hosted ledger job114560052968 failed with a YAML ScannerError at issue3833 ledger line50. Quoted both colon-bearing note strings and bound seven completed task entries to actual implementation commit97c4683d; existing test task keeps8da75a9d. No tool pin, workflow, or implementation behavior changed.

Validation: original ledger targeted command exits1 (ScannerError); restored fixed ledger exits0 with unchanged restored SHA256. The exact full CI command LEDGER_VALIDATE_ALLOW_SHALLOW=1 python scripts/ledger_validate.py exits0 through the detached network wrapper; six guidance tests pass. Merged current main6020028 without rewriting existing branch commits; repeated selected-ledger validator, six focused tests and diff check pass afterward. Local proof packet is retained under the opener automation evidence20261011T2000Z.

Matching keepalive owns new hosted checks/review. Closer must recheck complete expected topology, unchanged current head, full active threads and a fresh seven-minute push floor before guarded merge/actual compare. No merge was armed; source3833 remains open pending that lifecycle. The previous report of complete guidance is now supported by the actual comment change, but green local ledger evidence is not hosted completion.

  • Summary: The code change correctly removes Hypothesis from the canonical and both template runtime-dependency examples, preserves PyYAML and Pydantic, adds an explicit test/development dependency explanation, and does not alter version-pin lines, lock files, or requirements behavior. The focused regression test is substantive: it asserts the canonical example excludes Hypothesis and retains both required runtime examples, checks the explanatory text, and runs isolated subprocess pytest checks against deliberately mutated guidance and restored fixed guidance. Updating both template copies also addresses the authoritative duplicate-guidance scope. The implementation is readable and low-risk. A PASS cannot be issued because the explicitly required old/fixed command transcript remains unverifiable due to incomplete acceptance-evidence retrieval.
  • Concerns:
    • The acceptance criteria explicitly require retained PR evidence showing the focused pytest command fails with the original runtime comment and passes after byte-identical restoration. PR-comment and referenced-artifact retrieval is incomplete/unavailable, so this required transcript cannot be verified. This is an evidence-completeness gap, not an identified implementation defect.

    • Risks: 9.0/10
  • Summary: The canonical .github/workflows/autofix-versions.env now lists runtime dependencies as (PyYAML, Pydantic) and adds a comment that Hypothesis is a test dependency. The two template copies get the identical change. Tool pin lines are untouched and the change is comment-only, so no lock or requirements behavior changes. The new tests/test_hypothesis_dependency_guidance.py checks that no runtime example includes Hypothesis, that PyYAML and Pydantic are retained, and that the test-dependency explanation exists. It also runs the same assertions against isolated copies of the guidance: the original text fails, the fixed text passes, and restoring the fix passes again. Pin lines are checked as unchanged and the canonical file is never mutated. This meets the criterion that the test fails on the original text and passes after restoration. The remaining gap is only that the PR-level transcripts could not be inspected, and the ledger notes cover them.
  • Concerns:
    • PR comments and workflow artifacts were not fully retrievable, so the old/fixed pytest transcripts and the rg inspected-scope report could not be confirmed in the PR itself. The in-repo ledger records the results (fixed: 6 passed; original restored: 2 failed, 4 passed; fix restored: 6 passed; rg exit 1). The regression test also re-runs the old/fixed/restored cycle on every run, so the acceptance criteria are verifiable from code.
    • The rg check over docs was not independently visible in the diff. Only the template copies of the env file needed correction, and the ledger says no matches remain.
    • The regression test spawns a nested pytest subprocess and copies its own source with a string replacement of the path assignment. This is somewhat brittle and slower than a simple assertion, but it is guarded by asserts and by a 30-second timeout.

  • openai: The acceptance criteria explicitly require retained PR evidence showing the focused pytest command fails with the original runtime comment and passes after byte-identical restoration. PR-comment and referenced-artifact retrieval is incomplete/unavailable, so this required transcript cannot be verified. This is an evidence-completeness gap, not an identified implementation defect.
  • anthropic: PR comments and workflow artifacts were not fully retrievable, so the old/fixed pytest transcripts and the rg inspected-scope report could not be confirmed in the PR itself. The in-repo ledger records the results (fixed: 6 passed; original restored: 2 failed, 4 passed; fix restored: 6 passed; rg exit 1). The regression test also re-runs the old/fixed/restored cycle on every run, so the acceptance criteria are verifiable from code.; The rg check over docs was not independently visible in the diff. Only the template copies of the env file needed correction, and the ledger says no matches remain.; The regression test spawns a nested pytest subprocess and copies its own source with a string replacement of the path assignment. This is somewhat brittle and slower than a simple assertion, but it is guarded by asserts and by a 30-second timeout.

Actual post-merge regression evidence for merged head af65422:

python3 -m pytest tests/test_hypothesis_dependency_guidance.py -q -o addopts= on the merged checkout: 6 passed. Deliberately restoring the original canonical Hypothesis guidance produced 2 failed / 4 passed; byte-identical restoration produced 6 passed again. Canonical restored env SHA256: 9149696e52a58f8e7c4b7d35c3077474e75d6263accbab22759cbdedb30e9be2. Raw original/fixed/restored stdout and stderr are retained at /Users/teacher/.codex/automations/sync-dependency-pr-closer/evidence/20261011-3834-proof/. The targeted stale-guidance search returned no matches (exit 1); this is a search result, not a separate test PASS.

Verifier run 38176951595 remains NON_PASS: OpenAI CONCERNS, Anthropic PASS. A successful workflow execution is not provider acceptance. Inspection of its actual context manifest shows incomplete conversation/submitted-review capture due count/character limits, plus incomplete explicit run/artifact discovery and extraction. This is not an authentication outage. This comment supplies the previously missing actual transcript summary but does not repair those capture completeness flags; no blind retry is requested.

Receiving owner: existing Workflows #3831/#3820 capture/native-acceptance lane. Next action: adjudicate these concrete manifest limits against the current bounded capture implementation and provide a complete, exact merged-head input profile before one fresh verify:compare attempt. Recheck after that source prerequisite changes; do not mark #3833 fully verified or fabricate PASS meanwhile. Campaign source coordination continues independently through #3836 and Orchestrator #519.
