fix(errors): classify constraints and retain bounded report samples - #252
Distinguish unique_violation from other constraint_violation failures in PostgreSQL, MySQL-compatible backends, and Picodata, without inferring whether the workload or reused data caused the failure.
Preserve existing nonfatal iteration continuation. Neither new class retries by default.
Retain the first sample and native backend code per bounded error group in JSON/web reports and text summaries. Samples are capped at 512 UTF-8 bytes; configured credentials, quoted values, SQL/argument suffixes, and PostgreSQL detail/context are omitted.
Initialize credential redaction before workload execution. Keep samples out of metric labels; existing group bounds and duplicate suppression remain unchanged.
Validation
Pinned linter auto-fix and read-only lint passed
Full make tests passed with race detector and coverage
Race-tested bench, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Picodata, and report suites passed
Focused regressions cover backend codes, sanitization, first-sample retention under concurrency, UTF-8 bounds, report propagation, terminal non-retry policy, and credential-free report history

Historical 700 unknown errors cannot be reconstructed without the original log. This change preserves actionable evidence for future runs.
The PR adds unique-violation and constraint-violation error kinds and driver classifications. Terminal-error groups retain a bounded, sanitized sample and backend code in summaries and reports. Documentation describes the classifications, sample handling, and existing retry and iteration-continuation behavior.

Summary
Classify unique and constraint violations pkg/driver/errors.go, pkg/driver/mysql/*, pkg/driver/picodata/*, pkg/driver/postgres/*, pkg/bench/error_sample_test.go
Adds distinct error kinds and driver mappings for unique-key and other constraint failures. Tests cover backend classifications and verify these errors use one attempt and remain nonfatal.
Extracts backend codes and error messages, applies configured redaction and sanitization, and caps samples at 512 bytes. Error groups include representative values in snapshots and text summaries. Tests cover redaction, bounds, concurrent records, and summary output.
Expose error details in reports and documentation pkg/report/report.go, pkg/bench/report.go, docs/workload-authoring-api.md, CHANGELOG.md
Adds optional code and sample fields to report error groups and copies the values into reports. Documentation describes classifications, sample handling, retry behavior, and iteration continuation.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Direct issue #249 has two coding requirements. The driver classifiers add unique_violation and constraint_violation for PostgreSQL 23505/constraint codes, MySQL 1062 and constraint codes, and Picodata duplicate-key and constraint cases. Tests cover these mappings. The error reporter preserves the first code and sanitized sample for each bounded group. representativeError redacts quoted values and arguments, omits recognized SQL, produces valid UTF-8, and caps samples at 512 bytes. ErrorGroup carries code and sample into JSON. Text summaries also print both fields. The reported tests cover concurrency, report propagation, UTF-8 bounds, and non-retry continuation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #249. Classifier updates implement the requested error kinds. Reporter, report-schema, redaction, and sample-sanitization changes implement representative diagnostic data. Tests and documentation support those behaviors. Credential-redactor initialization, metric-label exclusion, bounded groups, and preserved continuation support the sample and classification requirements. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 8.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 12 functions across 14 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Resolution

Move new-group sample processing outside the write lock.
When an error group is new, groupState runs representativeError while it holds r.mu.Lock(). Redaction and regex passes scan the full message, and the 512-byte cap applies only afterward. A large first error can block other workers' record calls, including their read-lock fast path, until that work finishes. Compute the sample before taking the write lock, and insert it only if the group is still absent.

Review comment at @pkg/bench/error_reporter.go around lines 207 - 208:
Update groupState to compute representativeError before acquiring r.mu’s write
lock, then recheck whether the group exists after locking and insert the
precomputed state only if it is still absent. Preserve existing state when
another worker creates the group first.
Add a test case for the MariaDB check-constraint mapping.
Add a test case for the MariaDB check-constraint mapping.
errMariaDBCheckConstraint (4025) maps to ErrorKindConstraintViolation in ClassifyError. No test case covers this code, and no Go test in the repository references it. Removing or changing the mapping would not fail any test. Add a row next to the existing check-constraint case:

Review comment at @pkg/driver/mysql/errors_test.go at line 39:
The MariaDB check-constraint mapping lacks test coverage. Add a case to the
error-classification table in `errors_test.go` alongside the existing `check`
case, using `errMariaDBCheckConstraint` and expecting
`driver.ErrorKindConstraintViolation`.
The test records an error with no backend code. Its only reportErrors assertion checks Sample. A change that drops the Code assignment in reportErrors would still pass. Use a coded error in this test, such as one of the pgconn.PgError inputs already in this file. Then assert the code and its JSON output:

Review comment at @pkg/bench/error_sample_test.go at line 93:
Update the test for reportErrors to include a coded error using an existing
pgconn.PgError input, then assert the resulting group’s Code matches
summary.groups[0].code. Add a JSON serialization check confirming that the coded
group’s code field is preserved.

Skip sample redaction for overflow errors that already have a group.

Skip sample redaction for overflow errors that already have a group.
When the group map is full, every error with an unseen operation key runs representativeError before the lookup of the overflow group. That work is discarded if the overflow group already exists. Check the existing overflow group under the read lock before sanitizing.

Review comment at @pkg/bench/error_reporter.go at line 190:
In the error-group lookup flow, after the requested group is absent and before
calling representativeError, check under the read lock whether the group limit
is reached and the overflow group already exists; if so, return that group and
release the lock without sanitizing the error. Preserve the existing path when
no overflow group exists.
The JSON check asserts only the code key. If the json:"sample, omitempty" tag on ErrorGroup.Sample were removed or renamed, the field would still be serialized under a different key. This test would still pass. Asserting the sample key detects that change.

Review comment at @pkg/bench/error_sample_test.go around lines 122 - 124:
Update the JSON assertion in the test to also verify that `ErrorGroup.Sample` is
serialized under the `sample` key with the expected value, so renaming or
removing its JSON tag causes the test to fail.
