SDK: dedicated worker sessions and reusable prepared statements - #243
Add optional driver session capabilities without changing existing Driver or Tx interfaces.
Add worker initialization before measurement, one dedicated session per worker/database, reusable prepared handles, same-session transactions, and automatic cleanup.
Support PostgreSQL, MySQL, named databases, recording lifecycle, explicit invalidation/re-acquisition, and pool-capacity errors.
Document public API and add runnable prepared-counter workload.
Prepared-session integration suite with race detector: pass, including prepare reuse, affinity, cancellation, forced connection loss, replacement, named databases, capacity, and counter workload.
External-module public API contract: pass.
CLI prepared-counter runs on PostgreSQL and MySQL: pass.
Chart adapter tests: pass.
GitHub CI passes on 134ccec: lint/unit tests, baseline integration, borrowed-protocol engines, and banking fault injection. CodeRabbit approved 134ccec after re-review; all five original inline findings are resolved. Additional nonblocking test suggestions remain optional.
Contract
Existing pooled workload behavior remains unchanged.
Session handles are worker-scoped; commit/rollback preserves prepared statements.
No transparent failed-write replay or unsupported-driver fallback.
Prepared support alone does not claim identical wire traffic or scheduler-only benchmark parity.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added worker-local setup for benchmark steps, with startup time reported separately from measurement time.
Added dedicated database sessions and reusable prepared statements for PostgreSQL and MySQL, including use across transactions.
Added a prepared-statement benchmark example.
Documentation
Documented session and statement usage, supported databases, capacity requirements, and cleanup behavior.
Bug Fixes
Added automatic cleanup for sessions, statements, open cursors, and unfinished transactions after errors or cancellation.
The PR adds worker-local step initialization and dedicated database sessions with reusable prepared statements. PostgreSQL and MySQL gain session support. The recording driver captures session and statement lifecycle data. The PR also adds a prepared-workload example, API documentation, and tests.

Summary
Driver session contracts and implementations pkg/driver/session.go, pkg/driver/sqldriver/session.go, pkg/driver/{mysql,postgres}/session.go, pkg/driver/sqldriver/session_test.go
Driver interfaces define session, prepared-statement, and transaction operations. SQL session handling and the PostgreSQL and MySQL adapters manage connections, transactions, cursors, and statement lifecycle. Tests cover reuse, cleanup, and invalidation.
Worker initialization and SDK session operations pkg/bench/{execution,policy,worker,vu,session,query,rows}.go, pkg/bench/session_test.go, pkg/report/report.go
Worker steps initialize actions before measurement and close sessions after execution. The SDK adds session and prepared-query methods, session-aware transaction row cleanup, startup timing, and related tests.
The recording driver records session, statement, query, and transaction activity. Recorded operations add optional session, statement, and query-name fields.
Prepared workload example and integration coverage examples/authoring/{prepared.go,main/main.go,README.md}, docs/workload-authoring-api.md, test/integration/prepared_session_test.go, test/modulecompat/*, CHANGELOG.md
The example initializes sessions and prepared statements per worker and checks counter updates in transactions. Documentation, changelog entries, module-compatibility coverage, and integration tests cover the API and PostgreSQL/MySQL behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #233 coding requirements are met. pkg/bench/session.go provides public worker-scoped sessions, prepared handles, repeated execution and read methods, same-session transactions, identity, and explicit close. pkg/bench/execution.go and pkg/bench/worker.go initialize sessions before measurement and clean them up after cancellation, failure, panic, and worker completion. PostgreSQL, MySQL, and recording drivers implement session and prepared lifecycles. The SQL session invalidates failed connections without replay and requires reacquisition. Tests cover reuse, transaction affinity, named databases, cleanup, cancellation, reconnect, capacity, recording, and the public workload API. No requirement to update the contrib limitation is triggered because the PR does not claim the required reference transport measurement.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #233. Worker initialization and cleanup establish the required session lifetime. Driver adapters and recording support implement the requested capability and observability. Documentation, the prepared-counter workload, compatibility coverage, and integration tests directly support the public API and acceptance evidence. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Close worker sessions concurrently after a canceled step.
After execute returns, pkg/bench/execution.go:218-220 closes each worker's VU in sequence. Each VU close has its own 30-second cleanup deadline. If backend closes stall, step return time can grow by up to about 30 seconds per worker. Close the workers concurrently and join their errors.

Update the worker-session cleanup loop after execute returns to close each
worker’s VU concurrently instead of sequentially, while collecting and joining
all close errors before returning. Use the existing worker and closeSessions
flow; preserve the per-close cleanup deadline.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
sessionTx.end sets done and clears s.transaction before it knows whether commit finalized the database transaction. If a backend returns a commit error while keeping a valid connection in a live transaction, this session loses its rollback path.
A subsequent direct session query can run inside the preceding transaction despite the SDK treating it as ended.
This can occur when: A commit is interrupted or rejected without ending the server transaction, but SessionConnection.Valid still reports true.

PostgreSQL deallocation failure discards the connection rather than returning leaked statement names to the pool.
Validation: lint passes; focused race tests pass; prepared PostgreSQL/MySQL integration suite passes. Full local race suite passed with a longer cold-build timeout; mandatory integration passed. Latest CI is running.

Add a test for session close after a failed statement close.
TestPreparedCloseFailureRetainsCleanupOwnership clears closeErr and calls p.Close before it calls s.Close. A successful p.Close removes the handle from s.statements, so the final s.Close has nothing to close. The statementClosed == 2 assertion therefore counts only the failed attempt and the explicit retry. A regression that stops Session.Close from retrying a failed statement would not fail this test. Add a case that leaves closeErr set, calls s.Close directly, and asserts that the statement close is attempted and the error is returned.

Review comment at @pkg/driver/sqldriver/session_test.go around lines 145 - 150:
Extend TestPreparedCloseFailureRetainsCleanupOwnership with a case that leaves
closeErr set and calls s.Close directly after the initial failed p.Close. Assert
that s.Close returns the close error and retries closing the statement; keep the
existing explicit-retry assertions separate.
TestSessionCommitFailureRollsBackBeforeReuse checks the rollback but never begins another transaction on the session. A regression that leaves the session unusable after a rolled-back commit failure would still pass. The fake transaction returns connection.commitErr on every Commit, so the added commit must clear that error first. Then begin and commit a new transaction on the same session.

Extend TestSessionCommitFailureRollsBackBeforeReuse to verify the session
remains usable after the failed commit: clear connection.commitErr, begin a new
transaction on s, and commit it successfully before closing the session.
Add busy-cursor checks for statement close and commit to the recording session test.
Add busy-cursor checks for statement close and commit to the recording session test.
TestRecordingSessionRejectsOverlappingCursors checks only that p.Exec returns ErrSessionBusy while rows are open. The recording session also rejects Close on a prepared statement and Commit/Rollback in that state. Removing either guard leaves this test passing. Add checks for both operations while the rows are open.

Extend TestRecordingSessionRejectsOverlappingCursors to verify that closing the
prepared statement and calling Commit and Rollback each return
bench.ErrSessionBusy while rows remain open. Keep the existing p.Exec check and
close rows only after all busy-state assertions.
